The last couple of weeks have been some pretty busy ones with studies taking over and certain other things, such as singing have had to take a back seat. As I now have my holidays I'm happy that I finally can return to this space with a song.

I was randomly searching for a song online, and one link led to another, and that was when I stumbled upon this kannada song called "Turu tumtum". I already knew the song as I had heard it before in tamil, as "Kai thatti thatti" from the film "Jodi", though it was a male duo, whereas in this kannada version it's a female solo. Since there has been a gap since I've sung a peppy song, I made the decision to give it a shot. This will also be my very first attempt in covering a kannada song - a language which is completely unknown to me. But as they say, one time has to be the first, so here goes the last song from the blog in this year. With this, I would like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful new year 2012!

Thought it's been quite a while since I posted a hindi cover here. Therefore I'm here up with the song "Jaane do na"- A recreation of the yesteryear golden gem by maestro Ilayaraja; namely "Jotheyali" from the movie "Geetha". (The same tune was reused in the tamil version "Vizhiyile mani vizhiyile" from "Nooravathu Naal".

Another favourite of mine in recent times. A rustic folk number, composed by debutant M Ghibran for the movie Vaagai Sooda Vaa.

In spite of the number having a seemingly simple tune and minimal use of different instruments, it has somehow managed to become a hit song- All owing to the lovely lyrics penned by Vairamuthu, the composer who has managed to carry out the lyrics brilliantly through the blissful melody, and last but definitely not least the cute rendering by Chinmayi, filled with expressiveness, which can be seen through each and every line. Another catchy thing is the “ding dang ding” piece which can be heard almost throughout the whole song. Overall a song which leaves a great feel for the listener.

A little about the lyrics. I met a couple of new words in this song (words which are commonly used in the village), which I was quite unfamiliar with- words such as modaketthan rasam, kammanjsoru, nongu etc. Thankfully, by the help of a friend, who was kind enough to explain some of the lines to me, I could get my doubts cleared. One of those lines were: ”Mukkannu nunga naa nikkiren, mandu nee kangai yaen kaekkure?”- meaning “I’m the three-eyed palm fruit standing here, so why are you asking for the shell (kangai = shell of the nungu)”. :)

Kannathil Muthamittal was a critically acclaimed movie directed by Maniratnam and released almost a decade back. The movie was supported by music composed by ARR. The title track "Oru deivam thantha poove" along with "Vellai pookal" became huge hits. When I heard the first mentioned song for the very first time, it touched my heart immediately. What a haunting tune! Not to forget everything else associated with this song. ARR received the national award for the best music direction. Lyricist Vairamuthu won the national award for the best lyrics and Chinmayi received the Tamilnadu State Government Award. I got reminded about this song, while I was randomly searching through some videos and stumbled upon a video, where ARR and Chinmayi was performing this particular song. This was performed at Nehru Indoor Stadium in front of the CM J.Jayalalitha. I was truly mesmerized by Chinmayi's singing. Do check out this link to see her performance.

I happened to find a good karaoke track for this one. So here’s my humble attempt.

"Expect nothing and you're apt to be surprised"- With somewhat that thought attached to my mind I listened to the album "Thaalam" (Taal in hindi). Ofcourse I have to point out that, I always have high expectations to each and every composition by A.R.Rahman. Still when I heard this album for the very first time, a few years back, I wasn't quite impressed. Neither did I take the time to listen to the numbers carefully. Don't know whether it was because of the fact that it was a hindi movie dubbed into tamil or simply because the songs had been difficult to perceive, while listening to them for the first time. The last mentioned seems to be an explanation we all can relate to. As it is a very well-known fact that A.R.Rahman's songs tend to grow on you slowly after a few listens. Anyways, before I knew it I became fond of the songs and I was very much hooked on Kadhal yogi and Enge en punnagai in particular. I was pleasantly surprised, when the songs from the album actually exceeded my expectations.

However I couldn't just leave the song "Enge en punnagai" with just listening to it, so I did a cover version of it :) I do have to add that there were very few lines to sing in this one, so I took the chorus part as well. Now, presenting my version of this breathtaking piece by the Maestro of Madras.

Seems like I've commenced my own A.R.Rahman series here! Although this time I've managed to come up with a number from the early 90's and one of A.R.Rs earliest compositions in his career. Thee thee thithikkkum thee, an evergreen classic from the movie Thiruda Thiruda, which was directed by Maniratnam. What is there to say about this piece? Any attempt on trying to describe this composition will not do justice to it. The way Rahman has created this fusion of indian classical and western music is simply extraordinary!

Moreover this number also has an interesting story behind. In a radio talk show lyricist Vairamuthu, who had penned this song, was talking about singers, who have sung a minimal numbers of songs but at the same time created impact in these few renditions. Inbetween these thee thee was one of those numbers. Lyricist Vairamuthu told that he had written the lyrics for Thee thee in a hurry and went off, so he wasn't present when the recording of the song was happening. When he finally returned and heard the song, he was astonished by the voice and also curious to know, who the owner of this mesmerizing voice was. To his great surprise A.R.R. told him that the singer was a chinese girl, who apparently only knew Chinese and English! This singer was Caroline and unfortunately it appears like she has only sung this song. Nevertheless I was awestruck, when I came to know about this and I wonder how come I haven't heard about this piece of information before. Not to forget Carolines sincere effort to get the somewhat correct pronounciation.

Overall a killer composition, which clearly demonstrate that A.R.R. and his listeners never gets stuck in monotony!

With this brief introduction to this number I'm now coming back to my version. It was a long pending idea to sing this one and after coming across a mediocre karaoke track, which I had to do some work on, I decided to give it a shot. So here it is.

Yet another innovative composition by A.R.Rahman, from the much awaited Super Star Rajnikanth-Aishwarya Rai starrer Endhiran movie.

Kilimanjaro- A fast and foot-tapping number beginning with the sounds of african beats followed by tribal vocals, which sets the mood of the song. Despite the title of the movie Endhiran this song has no traces of robotic sounds and therefore makes it stand out from the remaining six songs on the album. Pa.Vijay has penned the lyrics for this song.

I recently stumbled upon a good karaoke track for this one, hence the idea of attempting this one. So for a change I'm here presenting a song, which is completely different from my previous covers. Here goes my version!

Raavanan, which has the combo of ace director Mani Ratnam and oscar winner A.R.Rahman, is probably one of the most awaited tamil films of this year. The concept of the movie is quite interesting as it is said to be inspired by the ancient epic Raamayaana. Recently the soundtrack, which included six mindblowing songs was released. As most of A.R.Rahman's compositions I believe that the songs will slowly grow on the listeners.

Kalvare kalvare was the first song, which immediately stuck to my mind. This number is quite different comparing to the remaining five songs of the album. First of all it's the only song which don't have some African chant. Secondly it's a complete melodious and romantic number. Shreya Ghoshal, who has crooned this song is truly worth mentioning, both for her expressive singing and her tamil diction, which is commendable as well! Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics for this song.

Kangalal Kaithu Sei is a tamil movie directed by Bharathiraja, starring newcomers Vaseegaran and Priyamani. A movie which I could repeatly watch just because of the excellent BGM by A R Rahman. It is really a delight to watch and hear all the scenes from the movie. All the songs impressed me listening to them the first time itself. My favorite song from this movie is Enn uyir thozhiye sung by Unni Menon and Chinmayi. The song opens with a prelude on piano and A R Rahman sets the mood of the song. Unni Menon begin with the lines 'En uyir thozhiye' followed by the voice of Chinmayi. Overall a wonderful melodious number.

Anyway I have been humming this song for quite sometime now, so I finally decided to sing it.

Majja majja a song composed by 'The Mozart Of Madras' A R Rahman and lyrics by Vaali. The song has heavy instruments but exudes a soft and stylized sound. The singers are fabulous, with Charan almost sounding exactly like his legendary father. The gentle voice of SPB Charan seamlessly mixes with Shreya Ghosal's soft voice and leaves a great feel for the audience. Rahman deserves praise for choosing the right combo to render this song which is filled with youthful exuberance.
